Safari Game Drives

Become part of Africa as you experience our Big 5 Safari Adventure on malaria free Amakhala Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape of South Africa.

For every wonderful night stay at Woodbury Lodge, two game drives with one of our friendly and professional guides are included in the price. The day you arrive you will be whisked away on your first safari drive, as the sun begins to set guests are able to enjoy a sundowner with drinks and snacks such as a South African favourite, biltong. Your next drive will be the following early morning, where you can enjoy a much needed cup of coffee with home made biscuits.

Amakhala Horse Trails

Amakhala Horse Trails offers a unique perspective of the bush: elevated on horseback, riders can enjoy incredible views of the surrounding landscape while gliding easily and quietly across terrain often inaccessible by vehicle. The unobtrusive nature of a horseback safari also allows for incredible animal sightings – riders can get as close as 10 to 15 metres from wildlife such as eland, wildebeest, zebra, hartebeest and giraffe.

Night Drives

When the sun goes down the diurnal (daytime) animals go to sleep and the nocturnal (nighttime) animals come out to play.

Get the chance to see the more elusive animals such as the Lion, Aardvark and Porcupine under the undisturbed African stars.

Guided Walks

Want to discover the bush while on foot, with the opportunity of getting up close with antelope, while exploring more of the smaller things including birds, flora and fauna. A qualified Game Ranger takes you out on an exciting walk through the non 'Big 5" side of Amakhala Game Reserve.

Star Gazing

A qualified game ranger with expert knowledge of the various star constellations, will take you out on a drive to a dark area on the reserve, not too far from the lodge, to show you what the constellations look like in the southern hemisphere.

Amakhala Game Reserve is an ideal choice for your Big 5 Safari destination.

This 8,500 ha reserve is renowned for its truly awesome topography, created by the slowly meandering Bushman’s River running through it.

Resting in the rolling Eastern Cape hills 80 kilometres outside of Port Elizabeth in the Addo area, Woodbury Lodge offers a gentle, tranquil escape from the world. The abundant Amakhala wildlife includes Lion, Leopard, Cheetah, White Rhino, Elephant, Giraffe, Zebra and Buffalo, ranging over a breathtaking oxbow river plain in the heart of the 8,500 hectare, malaria-free conservancy.

Not only do we offer the much sought after Big 5, but there are over 16 antelope species, zebra, giraffe and many other small interesting species. Our elephant sightings are likely to be the highlight of your stay. In addition to game drives, we also offer boat cruises and guided walks.

Amakhala Game Reserve has been awarded the voluntary label by Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa (FTTSA). Based on adherence to specific criteria such as fair wages and working conditions, fair distribution of benefits, ethical business practice, and respect for human rights, culture and the environment, the FTTSA label is an independent endorsement of fair and responsible tourism practise in South Africa.
